The more you play it, the more you'll notice it's problems, mostly because of players exploiting these flaws for some easy wins.
Why is Aoe2 better than Aoe1
Formations in aoe2 are awesome. everyone moves at the speed of the slowest and ranged units are at the rear. In Aoe1 it's everyone for them selves so faster units will get ahead. Aoe 2 had more efficient resource buildings.
Did Age of Empires 4 flop : It's not a flop but it isn't all that great either. Not unexpected from Relic (which is just a shell of it's former self before the bankruptcy) but still pretty meh. Yet acceptable levels for an RTS ('dead genre') year 2021.
I consider AOE2DE far better than AOE3DE. I won't say you are wrong, just that we have different play styles and preferences. Mostly cause the AoE III has much more different playing style with the home cities and cards. They're not really comparable imo.
