How long does it take to walk the Milford Sound : four days
It takes four days to walk the full Milford Track Great Walk, with three overnight stops at comfortable huts. If a shorter option is more your style, you can easily do a day walk on the Milford Track from Milford Sound Lodge. Find out more about a Milford Track day walk here.

How fit do you need to be to walk the Milford Track

A reasonable level of fitness is required and if you are not a regular walker, you should begin a daily walking regime that includes hill-climbing, at least 6-8 weeks prior to departure. You should gradually increase the distance that you walk, carrying a backpack and wearing the boots you will be hiking in.

Can you do Milford Track in 2 days : Walking options

The Milford Track can only be walked in one direction over 3 nights and 4 days.

The Milford Track is 53.5km / 33.2mi. Routeburn is 32km / 19.8mi. Though it's a shorter trek, the Routeburn is slightly harder with moderate-steep ascents and descents.

Independent (or 'freedom') walkers will hike the Milford Track without a guide and will need to book well in advance, prepare adequately and carry their own gear for the duration of the hike.

The sheer beauty of the scenery wins out in the end, but the competition it faced from other facets of the walk was as stiff as the wind at the top of the pass. Which is better, Kepler or Routeburn : There is really no one right answer to this. Kepler is the walk where one gets to experience alpine style hiking by walking on exposed ridge for better part of the hike. Routeburn is the trail with picture-perfect and more approachable scenery.

Which Great Walk is the hardest : The Kepler Track. At 60km, it's possibly the most challenging of the Great Walks, taking 3-4 days to complete. Mossy green forests, stunning ridgelines, curious bird life and endless mountain views await your discovery on the Kepler Track.

If you have a slightly larger budget and more time then we would recommend Doubtful Sound.
