The Witcher 2 offers a great story, large maps, and choices with consequences the like of which you've never seen. Calling it the COD of RPGs is like calling the Joconde a bunch of scribbles. It's without a doubt one of the best story-driven RPG out there, if not the best.On the other hand, The Witcher 3 is a fair bit more permissive, with combat being smoother and faster, fitting in better with the open-world, free-roam structure. Geralt is also more resilient and quick healing with potions is more of an option than it was in TW2, which required you to drink all potions ahead of time. You won't miss much if you start from Witcher 3. There's a few characters that have side quests that you'll be confused on, but it's not that big of a deal. All of the important plot from Witcher 2 is given to you at the beginning of Witcher 3. Witcher 3 is better looking, much longer, and a bit more casual friendly.

Is The Witcher 2 a hard game
From personal experience the Hard difficulty in Witcher 2 isn't that bad once you get the hang of the combat system. I felt it was easier than Witcher 1's Hard difficulty. You shouldn't have any problems playing Witcher 2 on Hard for your first playthrough.
Are Witcher 1 and 2 necessary : You can skip The Witcher 1 and 2
The Witcher 1 and 2 aren't necessary in the slightest. This isn't to say they're not good games, but in order to start anew with its own canon separate from the books, CD Projekt Red gave Geralt amnesia at the beginning of the first game.
The combat is tough when you're just starting out. You must get the Position skill in the swordsmanship tree ASAP. Otherwise attacks from behind will deal 200% damage which will kill you very quickly. Be sure to use Quen to minimize damage you take.
So in other words, storywise it doesn't make any difference which games you do or don't play before Witcher 3, because Witcher 3's story will still be a mess in every & any case. I never played Witcher 1 & 2 and didn't feel like Witcher 3's story is a mess. And obviously hundreds of thousands of people didn't.
Do I need to play Witcher 1 and 2 before
You can skip The Witcher 1 and 2
The Witcher 1 and 2 aren't necessary in the slightest. It is definitely shorter… Witcher 1 took me about 50 hours. This one took about 35-40… I tried to explore everything so you could run through it faster if you so desired.I actually found The Witcher 2's combat a bit more difficult in some ways compared to Dark Souls, but I'm playing on the hardest difficulty. I can safely say I love both games and cannot wait for The Witcher 3 and Dark Souls 2. I love this game, but i think the hardest part of this game is the wierd enemy AI.
They are both very much games of their time. Witcher 1 struggles with clunky mechanics and rough gameplay and 2 is riddled with QuickTime events. You don't really need to have played the first two to get into the third one though.
Is Witcher 1 and 2 connected to 3 : The Witcher 2 Improves The Series But Still Isn't Witcher 3
The story is much longer and is separated into five chapters (including the Prologue and Epilogue). The game begins with King Foltest starting a war to reclaim his illegitimate children before being assassinated by a witcher assailant.
Can I skip Witcher 1 and play witcher 2 : Skipping to it (Assuming you're not done the witcher 1) wont be that bad, youll get the references to the game that they throw off during the begining of the witcher 2 which will be good.
Is it necessary to play Witcher 1 before 2
The witcher game series handles much like the books. each game is it's own story, but each game has events and characters that relate through other games or books. because of this, you do not have to play one game to understand something in another. although it may make a little more sense.

The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt is easier than Dark Souls but more difficult than Skyrim. These are ten RPGs brutally harder than The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt.
