You won't miss much if you start from Witcher 3. There's a few characters that have side quests that you'll be confused on, but it's not that big of a deal. The Witcher 1 and 2 aren't necessary in the slightest. This isn't to say they're not good games, but in order to start anew with its own canon separate from the books, CD Projekt Red gave Geralt amnesia at the beginning of the first game.So in other words, storywise it doesn't make any difference which games you do or don't play before Witcher 3, because Witcher 3's story will still be a mess in every & any case. I never played Witcher 1 & 2 and didn't feel like Witcher 3's story is a mess. And obviously hundreds of thousands of people didn't.
Is Witcher 2 or 3 better : On the other hand, The Witcher 3 is a fair bit more permissive, with combat being smoother and faster, fitting in better with the open-world, free-roam structure. Geralt is also more resilient and quick healing with potions is more of an option than it was in TW2, which required you to drink all potions ahead of time.

By being more linear, The Witcher 2 feels more focused and to the point, having quests and side quests that don't deviate too much from the base plot. This contrasts the main questline of the third game, where you have to run back and forth with little advancement.
Are Witcher 1 and 2 worth it : OP, I disliked the first Witcher, but the second one is really better, I loved it, and the controls have changed immensely. You may or may not like it, but don't let the first Witcher's controls throw you off, they're not there anymore. It feels more like a Mass Effect with swords now, gameplay-wise.
Skipping to it (Assuming you're not done the witcher 1) wont be that bad, youll get the references to the game that they throw off during the begining of the witcher 2 which will be good. It's not mandatory. Witcher 1 is a very different game mechanically from the others, though, so you might want to do that first and then play the other two.

The combat is tough when you're just starting out. You must get the Position skill in the swordsmanship tree ASAP. Otherwise attacks from behind will deal 200% damage which will kill you very quickly. Be sure to use Quen to minimize damage you take.You definitely don't need to.
