I never played Witcher 1 & 2 and didn't feel like Witcher 3's story is a mess. And obviously hundreds of thousands of people didn't.

It feels more like a Mass Effect with swords now, gameplay-wise.It is definitely shorter… Witcher 1 took me about 50 hours. This one took about 35-40… I tried to explore everything so you could run through it faster if you so desired.
The witcher game series handles much like the books. each game is it's own story, but each game has events and characters that relate through other games or books. because of this, you do not have to play one game to understand something in another. although it may make a little more sense.
