When focusing on the main objectives, The Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings is about 24 Hours in length. If you're a gamer that strives to see all aspects of the game, you are likely to spend around 56 Hours to obtain 100% completion. You won't miss much if you start from Witcher 3. There's a few characters that have side quests that you'll be confused on, but it's not that big of a deal. All of the important plot from Witcher 2 is given to you at the beginning of Witcher 3. Witcher 3 is better looking, much longer, and a bit more casual friendly. It's story, characters and journey are well worth your time. If you played The Witcher 3 and think you'd still enjoy it without the open world you will definitely enjoy The Witcher 2.
Is Witcher 2 like Witcher 3 : The Witcher 2 could be described as a mostly linear progression through hubs. It doesn't have the freely explorable world of TW3, instead as the plot progresses, you're taken to a different central location surrounded by a reasonably sized area focused on a manageable number of well-developed quests.
Is The Witcher 2 shorter than 1
It is definitely shorter… Witcher 1 took me about 50 hours. This one took about 35-40… I tried to explore everything so you could run through it faster if you so desired.
Is The Witcher 2 a hard game : From personal experience the Hard difficulty in Witcher 2 isn't that bad once you get the hang of the combat system. I felt it was easier than Witcher 1's Hard difficulty. You shouldn't have any problems playing Witcher 2 on Hard for your first playthrough.
OP, I disliked the first Witcher, but the second one is really better, I loved it, and the controls have changed immensely. You may or may not like it, but don't let the first Witcher's controls throw you off, they're not there anymore. It feels more like a Mass Effect with swords now, gameplay-wise.
While The Witcher 2 is a definite improvement over the previous games, it's still unnecessary to play to enjoy The Witcher 3. CDPR even expected this, as a mechanic in place allows players who started on The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt to determine Geralt's choices throughout the second game.
Do I need to play Witcher 1 and 2 before 3
You can skip The Witcher 1 and 2
The Witcher 1 and 2 aren't necessary in the slightest. This isn't to say they're not good games, but in order to start anew with its own canon separate from the books, CD Projekt Red gave Geralt amnesia at the beginning of the first game. The combat is tough when you're just starting out. You must get the Position skill in the swordsmanship tree ASAP. Otherwise attacks from behind will deal 200% damage which will kill you very quickly. Be sure to use Quen to minimize damage you take. The witcher game series handles much like the books. each game is it's own story, but each game has events and characters that relate through other games or books. because of this, you do not have to play one game to understand something in another. although it may make a little more sense.
The Witcher 2 Improves The Series But Still Isn't Witcher 3
The story is much longer and is separated into five chapters (including the Prologue and Epilogue). The game begins with King Foltest starting a war to reclaim his illegitimate children before being assassinated by a witcher assailant.
Is The Witcher 2 harder than Dark Souls : I actually found The Witcher 2's combat a bit more difficult in some ways compared to Dark Souls, but I'm playing on the hardest difficulty. I can safely say I love both games and cannot wait for The Witcher 3 and Dark Souls 2. I love this game, but i think the hardest part of this game is the wierd enemy AI.
Is Witcher 1, 2 and 3 connected : Unfortunately, some fans may be too wrapped up in the hype to realize that playing the first two games isn't necessary to enjoy the third. The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt focuses on the last chapter of Geralt of Rivia's written tale, culminating several games' worth of decisions and consequences.
Can I skip Witcher 1 and play Witcher 2
Skipping to it (Assuming you're not done the witcher 1) wont be that bad, youll get the references to the game that they throw off during the begining of the witcher 2 which will be good.
So in other words, storywise it doesn't make any difference which games you do or don't play before Witcher 3, because Witcher 3's story will still be a mess in every & any case. I never played Witcher 1 & 2 and didn't feel like Witcher 3's story is a mess. And obviously hundreds of thousands of people didn't.The combat is tough when you're just starting out. You must get the Position skill in the swordsmanship tree ASAP. Otherwise attacks from behind will deal 200% damage which will kill you very quickly. Be sure to use Quen to minimize damage you take.
Is The Witcher 2 a good game : It's without a doubt one of the best story-driven RPG out there, if not the best. And that's coming from someone who has played RPGs since the 80's. OP, I disliked the first Witcher, but the second one is really better, I loved it, and the controls have changed immensely.
