Yes, aoe2 is the most played by far, even more than aoe4 which was released last year. It is consistently in the top 100 for active players on steam. There is a lobby system where you can find lobbies like you may remember.

In my opinion, this is the greatest game of all time. A brilliant RTS with a highly active player base, beautifully crafted campaigns & scenarios and competitive online multiplayer.

And I think that's a very important element to a game that makes it simple to digest.
