If you play 5 first, you'll never play 4, but 4 is good, so get it first. For a new player Civ 5 is the way to go. And I agree with Bullwinkle, once you go Civ 5, you'll probably never go back to Civ 4. For $12 the Civ 5 complete edition, is the most worthwhile purchase u'll make.
