In my opinion, this is the greatest game of all time. A brilliant RTS with a highly active player base, beautifully crafted campaigns & scenarios and competitive online multiplayer. If you are only buying one (and this is in the most literal sense) go with AOE 2, the game simply has more content and is more refined. Not a lot of people would say that the 1st game is better than the second; in this case it holds to be true.I consider AOE2DE far better than AOE3DE. I won't say you are wrong, just that we have different play styles and preferences. Mostly cause the AoE III has much more different playing style with the home cities and cards. They're not really comparable imo.
