Prior booking is essential – bookings open 1 July for the following summer. Book early to avoid disappointment. During the summer season there are resident Track Rangers, cold running water in huts, gas for cooking, lighting, heating and flush toilets.The Milford Track can be undertaken as a guided walk or walked independently. Guided walkers stay in separate huts and have a value-added experience through accommodation, hosting and service while independent walkers stay in Department of Conservation (DOC) huts and carry all their equipment and food.At New Zealand Trails, we believe there's never a bad time to do it during the hiking season, which begins in late October and ends before the winter snow arrives in late April.

How do I get to the Milford Track : Getting there

The Milford Track starts on Lake Te Anau. From Te Anau, take a bus or private transport to Te Anau Downs (30 minutes), then a boat trip to Glade Wharf at the head of Lake Te Anau (1 hour 15 minutes). The track finishes at Sandfly Point on Milford Sound.

The Department of Conservation (DOC) has three huts along the Milford Track and all three need to be booked together. Traditionally, the DOC booking system opens every year in June/July for the following Great Walks Season (end October – end April).

There is a challenging pass on Day 3, but the rest of the walk is suitable for most levels of ability.
