The witcher game series handles much like the books. each game is it's own story, but each game has events and characters that relate through other games or books. because of this, you do not have to play one game to understand something in another. although it may make a little more sense.Yes, they're all related. Witcher 1, 2, 3 and any DLC in-between all take place in the same universe and in some instances choices you make in one game carry on into the other.So in other words, storywise it doesn't make any difference which games you do or don't play before Witcher 3, because Witcher 3's story will still be a mess in every & any case. I never played Witcher 1 & 2 and didn't feel like Witcher 3's story is a mess. And obviously hundreds of thousands of people didn't.
